We brought in no smoking to our site in April of this year.
We now operate a smoking break ban. Employees have 2 breaks during the day when they are permitted to leave site and have a cigarette. This has been well received by all staff. The non-smoking staff say that this is fair as everyone gets the same breaks and the smoking staff have said that it has cut down their intake of cigarettes and saved them a lot of money. We negotiated our no smoking policy, including the banning of cigarette breaks through our works council. We also offered help and advice on giving up smoking through Occupational Health.

As an employer that attracts illegal workers just by the nature of our business, I welcome the Borders Bill.
I cannot believe in this age of modern technology that it is so difficult for us to ensure that our employees are totally legal to be working in this country.
We employ a large number of staff from ethnic minorities and it is difficult for us to get confirmation from immigration as to someone's employment status.
Let's hope that this Bill gets through as quickly as possible and saves companies like ours a lot of unnecessary wasted time and leaves our vacancies to those who are legally entitled to work.

We would normally put it down as hospital. However, if the employee works shifts, we would ask them to try and get the appointment for out of work time if possible. We would also get a medical opinion from their GP or our own Occupational Health as to how long these appointments are going to last to enable to plan his/her absences

Martin,
As a company that uses agency workers on a regular basis, we audit our agencies for proof that they are not using staff that they are not legally entitled to work here. They keep copies of all of the documentation that the temporary worker has supplied and confirm to us in writing that they have checked eligibility to work. Perhaps your company may benefit from doing something similar.
