CM no reason why you shouldnt use this door as the access to your place of work, many fire exits are infact the way in which persons normally enter a building. Only consideration would be from a security angle, if you can get in so can others, consider a locking device that is secure from the outside but can be easily opened without a key or code from within. As a fire exit it must always be usable from within

On the subject of PAT testing can anyone point me in the direction of some easy to follow guidance on PAT testing in what should be tested and when, how soon after purchase should new equipment be tested.
When carrying out fire risk assessments I almost always come across items that show no sign of PAT testing and comment so in the assessment, but I would like some additional infomation to help me.

You need to carryout a fire risk assessment, is there automatic fire dtection in the stairway, what is the width of stairs and how much space is left if a stairlift is fitted. You need to look at the whole picture with regard to the means of escape from the upper floors. The Current fire safety law requires you to carry out a fire risk assessment of the common areas and this should be an indicator to weither a lift is suitable.
As a former fire safety inspecting officer for a fire service I can remember a number of request sfor advice about stair lifts and means of escape and each was traeted on its merits. I now do risk assessments and would not have a problem subject to a risk assessment, you would have to consider is a stay put policy in case of fire suitable?

Tony, I suggest that you have a look at the Firenet web site forums there are many fire safety experts using this site many of which carry out fire risk assessment so they will give you some very good advice. http://www.fire.org.uk/punbb/upload/index.php if you want to it would be a good idea for you to put a detailed post in the fire safety section. You will certainly need a hard wired fire alam plus other bits and pieces, habe you regiistered with your local council as many give grants for fire safety work.
