My employer, the GMB union, has introduced 'Drive Safe' training for all employees who drive company vehicles. This was an extremely worthwhile training course that while only lasting a day, encouraged you to think about your own failings and put right some longstanding bad habits including tailgating and speed.
I really think that all employers should implement such training. It also teaches you how to save on fuel costs - something that would benefit employers and employees alike.

Craig I agree. Send them all to me !!!! All joking aside I'm sometimes amazed how little drivers know about road signs and markings and even speed limits for the vehicles they are driving. Very few people who come away from "driver training" without saying they had learn't something.

As an ex driving examiner, this may have something to do with the fact that you cannot fail your test on the signs test alone, this is done at the end of the practical test by the examiner , if the candidate has passed the practical test they can flunk the signs test but must still be passed overall, as it is assumed that by passing the practical they must have complied with the road signs along the route, makes a mockery of doing the signs test, students however know this through their instructors, therefore do not study the highway code as much as they should.

Geoff, it's a while since you were an examiner I can tell. To pass your test now you have to take a seperate theory and hazard perception test before you can take your practical test. You are right in one aspect though that people don't read the highway code enough, I can pretty much assure you half don't read it at all. Even when we go into companies to do fleet training we give all drivers a short theory test and you would be amazed at the results.
