Perhaps as grown-up's we would still like to think as fourteen year olds "gonna play hard and die young" and then like everyone have to review our phylosophy on the morning of our 25th Birthday while wondering where last ten years went before realising only five years to go before a decrepid 30 years OLD !
Or perhaps we would just prefer to "live in the now" carry on feeling bullet proof as in childhood where it is never gonna happen to ME and yet at the same time, sensible mature adults, buy into the dream of winning the Lotto ?
Risk has never been about " if " it has always been about " when " and how probable an event ' IS ' rather than how much we care or how comfortable we are with something happening to someone else..........
We are outraged at child abductions (0.01%) and worry even loose sleep about the well-being of our own children yet care little other than in a tokenistic fashion for example our peers who are experiencing stress or performance anxiety manifested in 'anger management' problems due to lack of workplace 'justice', bullying witnessed or experienced by 60% employees or DSE operators where HSE 2007 reports 58% experience visual fatigue followed closely by RSI type MSD's all of which are going to significantly affect performance, wellness & retention let alone productivity, insurance premiums and legal costs.
Improving productivity by 25% may not be about using a bigger stick or being risk averse just time for a reality check and the carrot to reduce the levels of "Collateral Damage to UK Human Resources" founded in the "Friendly Fire of omission"
Duty of care like health and safety cannot be delgated and as CSR increasingly becomes a legal obligation with the introduction of Corporate Manslaughter friendly fire and consequences of 'omission' will need to be risk assessed !
