I can hardly hide my disgust at the CBI attitude to this, the work/life balance, union improvement notices etc. - so I will not pour out anything that might be deemed libellous. I would urge all trade unionists to oppose this strongly and fight for more resources or the HSE inspectors to ensure bosses are not flouting existing working time laws!

Commenting on the story above, TUC general secretary Brendan Barber dismissed the CBI claims:
"Many workers simply don't get a choice whether or not to work long hours - some feel bullied into staying late, for others the workplace culture means that leaving on time is seen as letting the team down... The Government must stand firm against this employer onslaught and act to stop exploitative bosses from squeezing even more out of their overworked staff by refusing to renegotiate another opt-out when the current one expires later this year.'"

I have never recognised the "opt-out" within this piece of legislation. Think of the effects of "opting out" of other legislation, machine guarding, training requirement, management, Remember the working time regs came in under health and safety therefore there should be NO opt outs available.

In my workplace, the long hours culture is perpetuated by a handful of people who find it easier to work all the hours available than take their responspabilities as partners and parents to the detriment of society as a whole. These same people will drive home exhausted, drink, and return early for weekend overtime probably over the limit and are a liability to all and sundry.
End the opt out now.
