I agree that we should have more bank holidays.
I think the comment about being more dynamic than some of the countries with more bank holidays is very insulting to those countries concerned. Without the majority of these countries Britain wouldn't be able to function, so I see this as an excuse not to consider change.
A change of this nature would certainly improve moral in the workforce and probably productivity!

I agree with having more holidays, my company sticks to the 20 days leave. I live in England and can only go to Scotland once per year (besides christmas) to see my family. Other holidays are taken up at Christmas and New year and the occassional week away. I think 20 is not enough and should be raised to 25.

I believe that more annual leave would help to reduce the high sickness level in some areas of the workplace, lower the stress induced by understaffing and some of the draconian measures required to 'get a day off'.

Yes, there should be more paid bank holidays (and not included in annual holiday entitlement).Productivity and morale would rise and 'dodgy' sick days would fall. The UK economy is robust and flexible enough to accommodate the increase

Rather than increase the number of paid holidays, it might be more beneficial for some employers to allow greater flexibility in terms of attendance -if arrangements can be made so that work allocations are covered by other staff on a mutually agreed basis - if output (goods or services)does not suffer - what is esentially wrong in allowing staff time off when needed? MAny parents feel obliged to take a day off in order for instance to attend school events - that may only need a few hours abscence, but inflexible procedures force the employee to book the entire day off - or "go sick". Worklife balance is important.

Interstingly enough the report mentions that workers in the USA only have on average 20 days holiday per year.
US workers believed for years they were the best paid and had the best holidays and conditions etc. These workers now realise they are in some cases way behind the rest of the western world. These Workers have now decided to do something about it, and vote with their feet. So workers in the USA may only have 20 days holiday on average but not for much longer, I think!

Correction the US workers have only 2 weeks.
And yes I agree we all need more holidays.

It is extraordinary that St. Patricks day has gained more prominence in England than our own St. Georges day. Northern Ireland celebrates this day with a bank holiday so why can't we celebrate the 23rd April with a bank holiday too?
