Interestingly, when the Disability Discrimination Act came into force, it was assumed that most cases coming before the tribunals would result from issues surrounding recruitment.
In fact, the majority of claims stem from dismissal. This would seem to suggest that either disabled people meet little discrimination at the recruitment stage, or alternatively, find it impossible to gather evidence of discrimination from a company where they have not even worked.
Companies frequently advertise that they are positive about disabilities, but is this much more than a general well-intentioned statement? Employers could easily check how their day-to-day activities could be managed by staff with varying disabilities. This would then leave them well prepared for the recruitment process.
