Hi all,
Generally speaking, is it acceptable to have an employment contract with unequal notice periods (i.e. worker give one month notice to company, but company only need to give one week notice to worker)?
This has come to light in the case of an employee who has resigned (got another job) but believed that his notice was only one week on both sides. It looks like the line manager will let him go on just one week, but I'm anxious to know whether this disparate clause can remain or should be changed to something equal (this client are actually about to start redrafting their standard contracts anyway).
I can envisage a situation where (particularly with employees with less than a years' service) that the employee gives a months notice, but the line manager says "I don't want to pay him for the next month, I'll give him a weeks' notice instead".
Thanks in anticipation
