I have recently been informed by our M&E contractor that we are duly obliged by law to install a stand alone extract system within our post room.
In the event we were to receive incoming mail which was to be contaminated and therefore air borne, this would disperse quickly without gaining access to other areas of building?
Can you let me know if this is true?

Hi James,
I've spoken with Chris Streatfeild, who is one of Workplace Law's health and safety consultants, to answer your query.
He recommends that you carry out a business risk profile in order to establish whether you need to put measures in place. The risk profile should assess the likelihood of your organisation receiveing mail of threatening nature.
For example, if you are a small organisation with a small mailroom and no questionnable clients that you are aware of, the likelihood is small. If your risk profile therefore concludes that there is a low likelihood of any direct or indirect threat then you probably do not need to implement measures.
If there is a risk, then yes, you might want to have some form of quarantine / ventilated booth. This doesn't have to be a ventilator though - there are lots of different systems on marketplace.
Every organisation - no matter what the level of risk identified - should have a procedure for dealing with suspect packages, and some kind of quarantine area. This is simply good practice.
However, if you've identified a very suspicious package then you shouldn't be handling it - you should contact the police - and, again, this all needs to be detailed in your suspect packages procedure.
I hope this helps.
Kelly

Hi James good advice from Kellys pro, just to give you some idea of the considerations for risk assessment, you should look at your client base for involvment with Animal transpotation abroad, animal testing laboratories, right wing organisations etc it may be that the first line client is not immediatley involved but has a peripheral involvement or association, not easy how far do you delve ? depends how big you are and size of your client base.
