I'm not for one minute criticising the idea of a pro-active approach to H&S, but hasn't Prof Haslam missed the obvious here - very profitable companies are more likely to be willing and able to spend the money that a pro-active approach requires. I think that in some cases she may be confusing cause and effect.

Employers will be insulted as already believe the health and well-being of their employees "apposite" to their governance ethos although there has always been a large gap between intention and outcomethat the stupid employees just keep falling into costing them shed loads on their insurance premiums.
Never has been "rocket science" and investment in planned maintenance has always saved a fortune in lost production from down-time or break downs.
HR especially sensitive to "if it ain't broke don't fix-it" management of assets regardless of any number of messages to contrary so perhaps management are more like rabbits in the headlights than stressed out employees awaiting their award for collateral damage of the year......

There is still a minority of employers out there who simply do not give a damn about about their staff. It's unacceptable to that there are still those who think it's OK to cut corners and gamble with safety of their employees. The more forward thinking employers (i.e. not stuck in the Dark Ages) have recognised the benefits (financial and ethical) of taking a proactive approach. It isn't 'rocket science' to coin a phrase, and much less difficult than ignorant employers think. It needs the will - something sadly lacking.

In war tis called 'Friendly Fire" and sends everyone potty with 'how could they do that' yet so few seam to react to and seam to accept the omissions in duty of care in the workplace resulting in "Collateral Damage" to UK human resources.
Difference being, of course, is that employees do not yet perceive the workplace as a 'war zone' and imagine their occupation of someone elses company to be welcome and fail to appreciate that there will be insurgence and other hostiles just waiting for them to drop their guard and get e-vaced out of there - jus one less freindly as far as hostiles concerned.
So, look after yourselves and ya budies out their in employment land.
