this is potentially good news for everyone - everyone retires at some stage in their life
to have to go through this long drawn out process is a huge indictment against the "Labour" Party that bottled out of their initial intention to make mandatory retirement at 65 illegal in the UK... another shameful curtsey to the CBI
God Bless all at Heyday and may justice be finally done, in spite of Blair & Brown & guess who screwed up the pension system & the final salary pensions? Yes "Labour" Brown - we may as well vote Tory as at least we'll know what we'll be getting, unlike the turncoat Big Business Labour Party

But what will this do to our economy... if jobs are no longer being vacated at age 65?

There are so many young people leaving the country to work abroad because they are so fed up with things here, I think they are going to need the experiance of those "old" and wise heads!!

Times have changed - in years gone by, anyone over 50 was considered "old & past it" but now we live longer, have better diet, better health and certainly 60 is the new 40 so I don't want to be retired at 65 just because it's a number that someone else has said is my time to go. I should like to retire when I'm ready to and not be forced to go at an age when I still have a lot to offer. (I'm 57 by the way !)

Personally, I am looking forward to early retirement if I can afford it, but I know some people love their jobs.
The issue will have to result in competency tests. Some people at 65 or even 70 may be perfectly competent to continue; others may be becoming incompetent. The recent example of the English teacher is a good one; clearly he is competent to keep the class under control and interested, given the children backing him. I recall an older teacher when I was at school where we basicly did as we pleased, because he could do neither.
