Balancing measure! Oh my good God NO! that is the last aspect that any equality legislation needs. This will just add a timebomb to all equality legislation. Positive discrimination IS discrimination! I would like to be successful on my own merits and not receive a pity vote. This is the lazy way to make amends for discrimination, what we do need is stricter sanctions taken against employers who discriminate. is this 2008 or 0208! Pathetic, which think tank came up with this??

The only way that Harman will achieve true equality is to introduce a bill to genetically change human nature. Discrimination is part of our make-up, like it or not and it wont matter how many bills are introduced and passed, people will still find a way around it.

I agree Xlx with your comment. Postive discrimination can be just as bad as discrimination, but it all depends how it is handled. If it is used in such a way as to only increase recruitment/prmotion figures of minority groups for the sake of record keeping, then I would wholeheartedly oppose. However, if an employer took stock (using substantive audit methods) and decided to move towards a more representative workforce - i.e. one that is representative of the make-up of the surrounding inhabitants - then I would welcome it. Being a trade unionist, I would of course wish to see full union involvement in this exercise to avoid the siutuation you refer to Xlx.
