Although I do sympathise with working parents I believethat offering flexible working patterns should be open to all. I dont have young children but I still have a home to run and other committments and know that I would highly resent a colleague being able to leave earlier or start later than me (plus take time out for school plays, sports days etc) simply because they chose to have a child. More thought should be given to opening this out as it is always the 'childless' person that has to cover for the absent parent or who gets last choice come holiday time - ie Christmas cover. I believe a work life balance is important to all - not just parents - and if more companies were encouraged to operate flexi-time this would negate the need for 'special' dispensations (and probably ease the traffic congestion as well!)
