CRB Checks for Employees

We are a specialist electrical testing company and we are aware that some of our clients will be introducing the need for our test engineers to undertake CRB checks as our work involves testing in places such as schools and elderly persons residential accomodation etc.
Is there a straight forward "generic" check that can be carried out as the people I have spoken to about this suggest that one approval may be OK for one client but not for another - surely a CRB check is a standard process.
In relation to the work activity we are working in classrooms while the teachers/classroom assistant is present and in the residential accomodation we would be in residents rooms with their consent but not necessarily with the site manager present.
In a nutshell where do I start

It depends on the company, or School, or local authority, the term they use for this is Portability.

The CRB now states "Please note: The CRB no longer facilitates portability, organisations that choose to accept a previously issued Disclosure do so at their own risk (see limitations)" on its Portability page ...

Working in a boarding school myself I would suggest having your testers insist that someone employed by the school is with them when they are in pupils accomodation, If something went missing, or was broken, there could be repercussions.

One thing the school needs to do is a risk assesment for this situation;

"Due to the risks involved, if you are considering accepting a previously issued Disclosure you should carry out a full risk assessment. You may also wish to take further independent advice. Any risk assessment should take into account consider the following"

Also as you will read in the links above, schools generally require an Enhanced Disclosure.

I think that if you get your employees an enhanced crb, maybe on a 6 monthly cycle that may help you, but there are no promises.

There are two levels of check used if working with children or vulnerable adults - "standard" or "enhanced". It depends on the level of contact as to what is appropriate. Whilst from your description, it doesn't appear that there is much contact at all, I would go back to the clients and ask whether they consider you to need the higher level of CRB check.

If you as the employer arrange the CRB checks, then portability isn't an issue, as the employee is working for the company that requested the checks at all times. If you asked your clients to do the CRB checks, then EACH client would have to check EACH employee, as the CRB check would not transfer between clients.

You can get more advice from companies such as staffvetting.com
