An Idea for HR Practitioners

Chaps,

I've noticed quite a number of threads (on here and on other sites) from employees with a gripe against their management. In many situations, it is blindingly obvious that the company (and their policies) are at fault.

Is there any mileage in creating some form of confidential website where employees can anonymously report their company?

The idea is of course that a panel of HR advisors (inc solicitors) could then take the cases, telephone the employers, and try to 'sell' their HR or legal advice services.

Does anyone think this would work? Would anyone use it (either as a worker, or would you be interested in leads as a HR advisor?

Workplace Law people - this question is something that your opinion would be useful on too.

James - A good point, and one which we have been deliberating for quite some time.

This site is intended for employers and managers, and there is of course a fine line to be trodden to ensure that we don't dilute the forum with 'employee' questions. What you may not know is that we remove about the same number of comments that we receive in total, because they don't qualify.

We have been talking about a site for employees for some time to which we can redirect comments and questions. The thinking behind it being that it would be advertising driven.

There are some strategic issues for us. We don't want to be involved in encouraging employees to take action against employers and managers who might be Workplace Law Network members, for a start. And there are database issues that could 'force' comments and questions into the wrong place - for example, many of our members are line managers who usually ask questions on behalf of their employer, but they might have personal questions of their own.

Manual editorial intervention may well allow us to sort the technical issues, but is always susceptible to error and delay.

Good to see from your comment that you are thinking along the same lines, however, and it may be that our web team gets in touch in the new year if we do pursue the route outlined.

Even managers are employees and can be subjected to the same problems as other employees no matter how low or high along the chain!

Surely the whole point is to be able to discuss issues and get advice and if the odd "employee" slips through so what - we all learn something from their issues and the advice that is given.

I agree with Carole on this. I suspect that many items raised by employees are of genuine interest to members and possibly help them to consider employee perceptions of management policies and attitudes.
I also agree that a separate forum would be useful for genuine cases where legal support is necessary. Keeping the two areas separate may also prevent conflict of interest issues.

This is a great idea in my opinion, but can't really see how it could be implemented.

Its true to say that many 'voices' that come to this site offering advice, and workplace law people themselves, know their stuff.

I agree with James, David Sharp, Carole and David Ransome,

Maybe an internet forum would be the answer, but even then their would need to be careful monitoring; Name dropping could land you in more hot water than Brand & Ross have found themselves in, and it would need to be a seperate entity.

Just had a quick look at some Union sites and ACAS, they don't appear to have an internet forum for employees, which suggests this could be a more difficult task than I first thought.

I beleive very few people would identify either themselves or the other people concerned . Most people talk in general terms and would still beable to get a problem discussed without revealing data.

If a site is monitored as you say this one is then any breach could easily be taken off before an offense takes place but I think you would need a lot of monitors!

David Sharp - could I trouble you to send me an email, with your contact number? I believe my email address is in the profile somewhere. I've got a couple of confidential questions I would like to ask of you.
