Fire refuges: the controversies and the requirements

    An area of refuge is a location in a building designed to hold occupants during a fire or other emergency, when evacuation may not be safe or possible, until the fire brigade can assist.

    British Standards 5588 Part 8 – Fire precautions in the design, construction and use of buildings: Code of Practice for means of escape for disabled people – defines a refuge as:
