The Data Protection Act 1998, came into force on 1 March 2000 and actually replaced earlier legislation previously contained in the 1984 Act.  Its origins actually come from the European Data Protection Directive and its introduction was generated by the recognition that more and more information concerning individuals was being transferred throughout the European Economic Area which it felt should be protected.  It goes some way towards imposing rights of privacy although to a very...
