Manslaughter Charges in Barrow-in-Furness Legionnaires Outbreak

A council official has been charged with seven counts of manslaughter in connection with the fatal legionnaires outbreak in Barrow-in-Furness in August 2002.

Gillian Beckingham, 47, has been bailed to appear before Furness Magistrates Court on 24 Februaury 2004. The council itself has also been summonsed to appear with her in connection with the manslaughter charges. Both the council and Ms Beckingham have also been charged with offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
