Facing reality: Are TV contestants employees?

UK employment legislation has recently been brought into the sphere of reality TV, when a contestant on Britain’s Got Talent brought a claim of disability discrimination against the show at Central London Employment Tribunal.

Ameila Pearl Czikai, who suffers from Cervical Spine Neuritis, is accusing the producers and judges of “exploitation, humiliation, degradation and barbarism” and claiming almost £2.5m as a remedy.
