The Better Regulation Task Force has published a report calling for greater clarity in the implementation of the
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive and the
End of Life Vehicles (ELV) Directive, being introduced as part of the Government’s efforts to deal with the ever-growing problem of waste. Both pieces of legislation are expected to have a significant impact on UK business.
The report - 'Environmental Regulation: Getting the Message Across' - makes nine recommendations to the Government to help encourage transparency in the implementation of the Directives to help UK businesses understand what is expected of them and how they will be judged on their performance.
Recommendations include the following:
- Defining the outcomes of implementation as early as possible.
- Adopting a project planning approach to new legislation to ensure transparency on timing and implications.
- Publishing a readily accessible future plan of environmental legislation that is regularly updated.
- Communicating to stakeholders how and when standards will be set for the ELV and WEEE Regulations.
The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has published information online covering new and forthcoming changes to waste management legislation, which can be accessed by following the link to the right.
