Workplace Alcohol Ban Overruled in Danish Tribunal

A Danish court has ruled that a masonry company unlawfully prevented staff from drinking alcohol during unpaid breaks, reports Ananova. The 40-person staff took their employer to the Tribunal when the workplace alcohol ban was introduced without the involvement of the union in negotiating a solution.

The company has since posted its alcohol policy online. This case underlines to workplace managers the importance of explicitly spelling out company policy on drinking at work to staff. See Anthony Bertin's in-depth article on 'Alcohol Use and Abuse Update: April 2003' for guidance on regulating alcohol consumption in the workplace.
