Passive Smoking a Big Concern for Workers

A recent MORI poll has shown that over half (52%) of all workers are concerned they could develop lung cancer from passive smoking in the workplace. The survey, commissioned by Cancer Research UK, highlights the increasing profile of lung cancer. Government advertising using victims of lung cancer has ensured public awareness of the effects of smoking are at an all time high.

In today’s litigious society, employers should make sure the concerns of employees about smoking in the workplace are noted and addressed. Big-money cases involving victims of smoking are on the increase in the US, foretelling events here in the UK. Large payouts to former employees over passive smoking in the workplace is something many businesses can ill-afford.
