Six people, mainly suffering minor injuries, were taken to hospital, whilst others were treated on site.

It is believed that a ruptured pipe caused the explosion and Sainsbury's has switched offer other coffee machines of the same type in its stores whilst it investigates.

A Sainsbury's spokesman said: "Colleague and customer safety is our main priority. The store was evacuated and closed while the council's environmental health officers undertook an inspection.”
