A young financial adviser for Pearl Assurance has obtained six-figure compensation for work-related stress. He routinely worked 75 hours per week as a financial adviser over several years with dwindling back-up and support from his employer, according to his union (MSF-Amicus).

The man, in his mid-thirties and who has not been named, suffered a nervous breakdown as a result.

The union commented: "Having recovered, he returned to work only to be faced with the same workload and lack of support which had originally caused his illness... He suffered a second nervous breakdown and was unable to continue in his employment. He is now attempting to re-build his life at a vastly reduced salary. The union supported the member's personal injury claim and we were able to achieve a six-figure sum in settlement based on his second breakdown."
