Employee with bad back ‘ran in sprinting races while off sick’

    A London council worker is being prosecuted for fraud after continuing with athletics work and events whilst off sick with an injured back.

    Matthew Thomas, was signed off sick with a bad back from November 2007 until his resignation in June 2008.  During that time he was paid sick pay totalling £13,892.12 after telling bosses at Newham Coucil where he worked as a payroll officer that he had fallen off a ladder and injured his back.
