How to deal with smoking at work has been one of the most talked-about workplace topics over the past couple of years. The debate has just been re-ignited, with high-profile media coverage of a BMA report calling for a ban on smoking in all public places. While there is not yet a Code of Practice for employers to work with, there is guidance available:

    - Read the Network Guide "Smoking at Work", by Masons Employment Group. This sets out the legal requirements, and the factors that employers should take into account when introducing a smoking policy. You can access this in the A-Z Guides section, or by using the link under 'related resources'.

    - Read the HSE guidance, "Passive Smoking at Work", available at www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/smokindx.htm. This gives general advice about workplace smoking policies.

    - Read the HSE's local authority circular on passive smoking, available online at www.hse.gov.uk/lau/lacs/91-1.htm, which sets out the enforcement approach.

    - Use the 'related resources' provided to see the recent history of the debate, and the difference proposals for how employers should deal with the issue.

    - For specific information, please put your query to a member of the Network Online Advice Panel. Alternatively, call the HSE Infoline on 08701 545500.
