Warning to employers who use self-employed workers

    Tax and employment specialists are predicting that HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will be clamping down on people claiming self-employed status after winning the latest round in a case against Weight Watchers.

    A tax appeals tribunal has ruled that HMRC was right in deciding that the 1,700 team leaders at Weight Watchers (WW) centres in Britain were working as employees rather than working on a self-employed basis. It could cost WW over £23m. WW is expected to appeal.
