Cumbria and Lancashire NHS health protection unit has confimed that Britain's worst ever legionella outbreak has been traced to the air conditioning plant in the Forum 28 civic centre.

A spokesperson for the unit said that it is never possible in these cases to be absolutely certain, but that they could trace the cause ""beyond all reasonable doubt". Legionella bacteria was found in the water cooling system at the centre, while the other "potentially hazardous" air conditioning plants were all confirmed to be clear of the bacteria.

The outbreak has already been responsible for 4 deaths. Organisations across the UK are reviewing their water systems and maintenance procedures.
