Packaging

In 1994, the European Union adopted Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste (‘the Directive’). The Directive introduced a regime for the recycling and recovery of packaging waste and required packaging to comply with requirements regarding its design and composition. This included restrictions on the use of certain hazardous substances in the manufacture of packaging.
