The fire at Buckingham Palace - which threatened to disrupt the jubilee celebrations - is a high profile example of the importance of good fire safety management and disaster planning.

A fire in a flat above the East Gallery was quickly detected at 1845 by the Palace's internal automatic fire detection system. The Fire Brigade was called and the fire was rapidly extinguished. Nobody was injured and there has been no damage to works of art. The systems in place managed to prevent an event of the sort that nearly destroyed Windsor Castle.
