Age discrimination by employers: new report

British Gas and Help the Aged have joined forces to expose and challenge age discrimination across the UK. The campaign coincides with the final month of the government’s current consultation round on its plans to outlaw discrimination in employment on the grounds of age, sexual orientation and religion.

Research by Help the Aged suggests that 10% per cent of a sample of 500 companies had no-one aged over 50 years, and that 44% per cent of managers said they had experienced age discrimination.

Help the Aged is calling for the legislation on age diversity required by the European Equal Treatment Directive for 2006 to be brought forward to 2003 and to be extended to cover goods, services and facilities.
