Consultation drafts of two environmental management standards are now available from the British Standards Institution (BSI).
"BS EN ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems - Specifications with guidance for use" and "BS ISO 14004 Environmental Management Systems - General guidelines on principles supporting techniques" are being updated to reflect current thinking, and are likely to be published in 2004.
The BSI warns that to be effective, environmental reviews and audits need to be conducted within a structured environmental management system (EMS). Most importantly, such a system enables organisations to establish and assess the effectiveness of an environmental policy, and minimises the risk of non-compliance with legislation.
The draft revisions of BS EN ISO 14001 and BS ISO 14004 cost £20 each, (£10 to BSI Members), and can be ordered online.
