Redundancies should be a "last resort" as employers cut costs, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) insists.
Planning for recovery by keeping staff is a better and potentially cheaper approach, it adds, saying an average redundancy costs employers £16,375 before any savings are made.
The CIPD earlier warned 600,000 jobs could go this year, while others have warned unemployment could hit three million.
