Maternity and pensions: legal obligations "still unclear"

    Maternity rights will change for employees whose babies are expected on or after 5 October 2008, but not so as to require employers to make more pension contributions than currently applies.

    For a number of years, given the lack of clarity in UK law, the general approach within the pensions industry has been to restrict pension accrual during maternity absence to periods when the member is paid.

    Recently announced changes to maternity rights do not require changes to such pension practices... (303 more words)
