Central Government staff have been banned from removing unencrypted laptops containing personal data from their offices, following the theft of a Ministry of Defence Laptop containing the personal details of 60,000 people.
A massive operation to ensure that civil servants comply with the new rule, laid down by Cabinet Secretary Sir Gus O'Donnell on Monday night, is now under way.
In an email to top civil servants on Monday evening, Sir Gus said:
