HMRC data loss highlights need for vigilance

    The loss of confidential details relating to 25m people highlights once again the need for employers and their staff to be vigilant when it comes to the storage and transfer of personal data.

    The missing HMRC information was contained on two computer discs, apparently sent to the National Audit Office by a junior HMRC official via unregistered post, using its internal courier, TNT. This was a clear breach of HMRCs own security guidelines.
