FTSE4Good yesterday announced the introduction of a new series of indices, which measure corporate social responsibility (CSR). These measures will allow investors to track and compare the performance of CSR companies transparently and objectively.

Environmental managers welcomed the index series, which aims to raise $1m for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The indicators will be effective from 31 July 2001.

However, as an article in FM Legal Update pointed out earlier this year, gathering information on companies' environmental policies is difficult to obtain, and it remains to be seen what value these indicators really have.
