Workplace Law is an accredited OHSAS 18001 lead auditor. While OHSAS 18001 is not a formal international standard, it is recognised throughout the world as the primary advisory health and safety standard and the one that fits in best with organisations who have already attained the ISO 9000 standard for quality and ISO 14001 standard for environmental management.
Our team of qualified health and safety consultants have years of experience in conducting health and safety inspections and audits in workplaces up and down the country.
Auditing
We undertake formal health and safety audits on the basis of the OHSAS 18001 model. Such audits can be used as an independent review of health and safety performance (for example, once a year) as recommended by the Health and Safety Executive. It is a requirement of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure that health and safety arrangements are reviewed regularly, and the findings of the audit are an essential part in this.
Another reason for conducting an audit might be as part of an action plan to prepare for attainment of the full OHSAS 18001standard.
During the Workplace Law health and safety audit, process data is collected and collated under 17 separate sections, where the inputs and outputs of each process are analysed. Sections include:
- Occupational health and safety policy
- Occupational health and safety planning for hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control
- Legal and other requirements
- Health and safety objectives
- Occupational health and safety management programme
- Organisation (structure and responsibility)
- Training, awareness and competence
- Consultation and communication
- Documentation
- Document and data control
- Operational control
- Emergency preparedness and response
- Performance measurement and review
- Accidents, incidents, corrective and preventive action
- Records and records management
- Audit
- Management review
Detailed conclusions can then be drawn up, and prioritised action points are presented based on the findings.

Inspections
We undertake health and safety inspections on general or specific areas of risk.
Our standard general health and safety inspection can help you to comply with your responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. This is a useful document when measuring performance over a regular period (such as annually) or in lower risk environments such as office premises and smaller businesses.
The general health and safety inspection consists of a detailed in an 84-point checklist, which addresses the following areas of risk:
- Housekeeping
- Environmental conditions
- Manual handling
- Design and use of display screen equipment
- Welfare facilities
- First aid facilities
- Safety signage
- Work with hazardous substances
- Personal protective equipment
- Fire safety
- Machinery and equipment
- Violence and aggression towards staff
- Management of health and safety
- Electricity
- Lone workers
- Higher risk workers
Our inspections on specific areas of risk are more detailed. They might include specific types of workplace such as: schools, laboratories, retail units, and manufacturing plants. Or they might include specific types of hazard such as: driver safety, electrical safety and testing, hazardous substances, work at height, and work equipment.
