Absence - what's the cost to your business?
In June 2007 the Department for Work and Pensions announced that the UK loses 175 million working days each year to sickness-related absence, costing the economy over £13bn.
The cost of Employers’ Liability Compulsory Insurance is increasing, yet this does not even begin to cover the full costs of sickness absence; consequently, more and more employers are looking for ways to address the root cause of occupational ill-health, and are employing the services of occupational health professionals within their organisations.
According to the CIPD, the involvement of OH services, the provision of rehabilitation programmes, and flexible working are identified as the top three approaches to managing long-term sickness absence. The past year has seen a doubling in the number of employers developing employee wellbeing programmes, proving that OH services in the workplace can benefit a company greatly in reducing the burden of sickness absence.
